Hip-roof-style garages provide the most protection from the elements because they offer a generous overhang on all four sides of the structure. Hip roofs are four sided, with all four sides sloping up to the apex and ending in either a point or a platform.

Gable Garages are the standard garage roof style. The triangular gable faces the road and is built to match the gables on the house. Gable garages are characterized by the angle of the roofline sloping to the sides of the building.

Reverse gable roofs are roof sections that extend in the opposite direction from the normal gable construction. These are usually miniature additions that allow homeowners to include windows and peaks in an otherwise flat roof slope.

You can build a deck on a garage, provided you have a garage with a flat roof, or if you plan to build a garage that will be adjacent to the house but below the level of the main floor. A deck atop your garage may well save money compared to a deck build separate from your garage.
